North American B-25 Mitchell Bomber Randolph AFB

A B-25 Mitchell bomber approaches the runway April 17 at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. The plane flew into the base to help celebrate the Doolittle reunion taking place there to mark the 65th anniversary of the Doolittle raid.

Lockheed YF-12 with AIM-47 Falcon Missile

The Lockheed YF-12A carried three GAR9/AIM-47 (Falcon) missiles which could carry a 250 kT nuclear warhead. These missiles were later developed into the AIM-54 Phoenix system carried by the Navy F-14 Tomcat Fighter.

Lockheed YF-12 Tri-Sonic Interceptor

Lockheed YF-12 (S/N 60-6936) on the taxiway. Conceived as a triple-sonic interceptor aircraft, the YF-12 had all of the blazing performance of its more famous sister aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird. On May 1, 1965, the YF-12 set no less than nine world absolute speed and altitude records at Edwards Air Force Base. Among these was a sustained altitude of 80,257 feet and a speed of 2,070 mph. In spite of this performance and operational potential, the aircraft never entered production.

USAF F-15 Streak Eagle Record Breaker

The F-15 "Streak Eagle," broke eight time-to-climb world records between Jan. 16 and Feb. 1, 1975. In setting the last of the eight records, it reached an altitude of 98,425 feet just 3 minutes 27.8 seconds from brake release at takeoff and "coasted" to nearly 103,000 feet before descending. It was flown in its natural metal finish to reduce weight for the record-setting flights.
